Barclays pingit Mobile App

Mobile App Re-deisgn

Senior Visual Designer | 2015

My role as Senior Designer at Barclays involved creating a new design experience for Barclays peer to peer mobile payment app pingit.

During the project I worked closely with the design director, UX designers and development teams to design and deliver a full redesign of the pingit app for iOS, Android and Windows phone.

Identifying the problem

Research & Insight Gathering

Launched in 2012, pingit was Europe's first mobile payments service allowing Barclays customers to make payments via the app using their mobile phone number. Barclays had recently brought their digital team for pingit in-house after it previously being outsourced to an external design agency. The bank wanted to overhaul it’s peer-to-peer mobile payment app after identifying opportunities for new features such as international payments and third party payments for National Lottery and various charities. Also Barclays had teamed up with Zapp to allow pingit to be used at point of sale terminals in shops.

The app had quickly become dated and required a new approach to the UX and UI. The team and I spent months on a large discovery piece to pitch to the banks product stakeholders, researching other payment app’s in the mobile app space and conducting early user testing and interviews to begin to define a roadmap for pingit’s re-design cycle.

Design Process & Solutions

Ideation, Prototyping & Design

Once the team had a defined roadmap of key features, I began looking at the app architecture, journey flows and initial wire-framing and structure of the application as well as design discovery for a new look and feel. Later in the project this also included an updated pingit brand look and feel which was applied towards the end of the project across the app and all other materials relating to pingit.

The Outcome

Results

The re-designed update of the pingit app was pushed live in early 2016 and had highly positive responses from existing users and new adopters alike. Customers loved the new green ‘sticky’ payment button, simple and easy to navigate look and feel including great 5 star comments discussing new features like international payments and using pingit as a digital wallet. High ratings and user comments were left on Barclays apple and google app store, as well as positive feedback on customer satisfaction surveys collected by the research team.

My Design Process

  • Every project begins with understanding and research. Identifying and understanding the problems of a product or an idea and how something works is at the base of every project I tackle.

  • After the understanding of the problem has been thoroughly researched and understood I then begin to ideate through, sketching, holding workshops, creating mockup designs and prototyping journeys and flows .

  • Testing designs and user experiences with human beings is the next step in the process, and the way of validating ideas explored in the previous process of sketching and designing potential solutions. The insights gathered from user testing is assessed and the learnings then help to evolve the design and thinking.

  • After testing and iterating, testing again if necessary it’s then time to start refining and finalising designs into a finished product ready to be built by development teams. Project depending, development can also be part of the test process for A/B test and other forms of validating designs in a live environment. Final designs will be thouroughly tested again for QA to ensure design and behavious are correctly implemented.
